PNU Library Mission, Vision and Objectives
MISSION
Provide relevant library resources and quality service in support of the PNU objectives in general and the curricular offerings in particular.VISION
The PNU Library as a dynamic and responsive center for research and information on teacher education and related fields.Library Sections
Following are the sections of the PNU Library arranged according to their location from the first floor up to the fourth floor of the library building.
Basic Education SectionThe Basic Education Section, formerly known as CTL Library, serves the PNU elementary and high school students in their use of library materials. It is also a place for conducting storytelling sessions for preschool and primary school pupils. It also serves the college students who want to use materials for their lesson plans and other course requirements. The library collection consists of books and nonbook materials for children and young adults on various subject areas.
PNU-CLAPI LibraryThe library houses a collection of children’s books and other materials given by the Children’s Literature Association of the Philippines, Inc. CLAPI is a non-stock, nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and development of children’s literature and cultivate closer fellowship and cooperation in the Philippines. The Library is located on the first floor adjacent to the Basic Education and Periodical Section.
Technical Services SectionIn this section acquisitions work together with the cataloging and classification of books are being done. It maintains the following library records: accession record, shelf list, lists of processed books transferred to the library sections, inventory record, and the lists of classified books by subject areas. It also facilitates the encoding and updating of catalog entries in the library’s online catalog. The section is located on the first floor adjacent to the Conference Room.
Theses SectionThe theses section contains the theses, dissertations and special projects written by the PNU masteral and doctoral graduate students submitted to PNU. It also houses the special projects, theses and dissertations on education transferred from the DECS library as well as those recently deposited by masteral and doctoral graduates from other Philippine Colleges and Universities. This section is located on the second floor, left wing of the library building.
Periodical SectionThis section contains serial sources such as newspapers, magazines and journals. It also houses other reference sources such as pamphlets, handbooks, annual reports, PNU yearbooks, clippings and pictures/ posters. The section is located on the second floor, left wing, as one enters the main door of the library building.
Japanese SectionThis area houses a special collection of books and objects about the Japanese customs, traditions, art, history, language, literature, etiquette and economic conditions. It is located on the second floor fronting the online public access catalog area.
Knowledge Resource SectionThis section is responsible for the implementation of policies and procedures concerning the borrowing and returning of books borrowed for overnight or home reading use by the faculty, administrative staff and students. It is found in the third floor of the library building and has the following collection:
- Filipiniana Collection
This is a collection of books about the Philippines, books written by Filipinos, and books written in Filipino language and other Philippine languages and dialects. It is located on the third floor adjacent to the Technical Services Section
- Reference and Education Collection
It contains collection of general and subject reference sources such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, yearbooks and other materials that are referred to for specific items of factual information. The section is located at the middle area of the third floor. It also has collection of books in general education and related fields.
- Foreign Books Collection
It has collection of books intended for the undergraduate and graduate college students to support their research needs. It houses and circulates books written by foreign authors on topics related to the various curricular courses and other subject areas. This section is located on the third floor adjacent to the Reference and Education Collection.
- Special Collection
It contains book collection from generous donors like Dr. Eduardo Fajardo (LASC), heirs of Genoveva E. Matute (GEM), Genaro R. Gojo Cruz, Conchita Tan-Wilman, among others.
- Rizaliana Collection
It contains collection of books from the writings of Dr. Jose Rizal and books about him written by different authors.
The stack area contains duplicates of some books, theses, and special projects. It also houses PNU yearbooks, bound and loose issues of periodicals. Old books and books that are seldom borrowed as well as books that are considered for weeding are also placed in this area. It is located on the fourth floor of the library building adjacent to the Archives section.
Library Facilities
Conference RoomA conference room is located on the first floor at the right wing of the library building. It is used for various purposes -- as a seminar room, a demonstration room, a venue for faculty and staff meetings and a room for holding programs. It can accommodate a maximum of 100 persons.
Online Public Access Catalog AreaThe OPAC area is located on the second floor near the Thesis Section. It can accommodate 12 online catalog users at a time. It is an air-conditioned library facility
LobbyLobby welcomes library clients with the newly transferred OPAC workstations. It contains Athena Library System (LAN). In addition, Destiny Library Manager (DLM), a web-based library system can be used to access the PNU Library collection 24/7 anywhere. DLM application can be downloaded in an android phones and tablet.
Venue for Comprehensive Examination, BAC Meetings and Interview of College FreshmenThe library orientation is usually rendered during the first month of the first semester to college freshmen. Basic information about the library rules, sections, facilities, collections, personnel and services are shared to the new students. The orientation is held in several sessions at the Audio-Visual Theater or Multimedia Center.
Multimedia CenterThe library multimedia center is housed in Room 201 adjacent to the library internet room located on the second floor of the library building. It is exclusively use for teaching and demonstration purposes of classes requiring IT facilities like videos, computers and LCD projector.
Discussion RoomsNewly installed rooms can be used in the second floor to provide library clients with an additional venue for learning. Reservations are made with the second floor librarian in-charge subject to rules and regulations in its use.
Audio-Visual TheaterThe AV theater is located at the central part of the fourth floor. It functions as an auditorium and can accommodate around 300 persons. The theater is fully air-conditioned and furnished with lighting and other theatrical equipment. Reservation is through the office of VPURA.
Viewing RoomsClasses or groups of students wishing to view videorecordings in VHS, VCD, or DVD formats make use of the viewing rooms located at Room 413 and at the Thesis Section and Room 201. Using the viewing rooms require reservation and registration of users by the faculty members concerned.
Library Services
Aside from the regular functions performed by the library staff in connection with the acquisition, cataloging and circulation of library materials, following are the library services rendered to the library users:
Current Awareness ServiceThis service is concerned with the preparation of lists of newly acquired and processed materials by the PNU Library which are disseminated to the academic departments for their information. The lists are also circulated though emails, PNU Library Homepage and various library sections informing the students of new library materials. The library cataloger takes charge of this service.
IPad RentalThe iPad rental is located in the first floor. It can accommodate 10 users at the same time. It is for the exclusive use of PNU bona fide students, faculty, administrative. The rental fee is Php 15.00 per hour.
Computer NookAn Individual computer work station is available on a first come first serve basis only in the KRS and Basic Education Section. Students can surf the internet, search the web opac and use electronic resources for an hour for free.
Photocopying ServiceThe library photocopying area is located on the first floor lobby. This facility is installed so students can save time in copying information from library materials and at the same time safeguarding the collection from possible tearing of pages. Materials not allowed for photocopying are the theses, dissertations, special projects, and general reference materials.
WifiLibrary clients can access free wifi connection in the University Library by completing the log-in information needed.
Issuance of new Library IDA new Library ID is being issued to students; it serves as an entry and circulation requirement. It is validated every term in the Office of the Head.
Digitization of abstracts and bibliography of PNU Thesis, Dissertations and Special Projects.To facilitate easy retrieval of information, abstracts and bibliographies of unpublished materials are being digitized and uploaded to DLM. Newly processed titles are now available for searching in the WebOPAC. Encoding/digitization of all collection of the Thesis Section are on-going. Viewing/reading of digitized information can be done in the Computer Nook.
Reference ServiceThe following forms of reference service are rendered by the librarians:
- Guidance in the choice of books
- Guidance in the location of library materials
- Readers advisory service
- Answering reference questions
- Formal and informal instruction on how to use the library reference sources.
- Bibliographic service
- Maintenance and circulation of news clippings
- Indexing and disseminating periodical articles
This service is rendered to PNU faculty and students who may want to use the resources of other institutional libraries on a specified time. A PNU researcher is provided with a referral letter issued by the Office of the Chief Librarian. Only bonafide faculty and students can avail of the referral service.
Service to Outside ResearchersStudents from other schools as well as researchers from other institutions are allowed to use the library materials upon submission of the following to the Circulation Section In-charge.
- A validated school/office I.D.
- A referral letter issued by the librarian or administrator of the institution
- Receipt of payment of the PhP 100.00 outside researcher’s fee per individual per day
Only students from I-IC member schools as well as PNU retirees are exempted from paying the outside researcher’s fee.
Reserve Book ServiceReserve books are library books assigned by the faculty as required reading materials for their classes. Faculty members may request titles of library books to be placed on reserve by accomplishing the “Reserve Book Request” form available in the library sections. At the end of every semester/ summer term all books placed on reserve are returned to their original location in the library.
A book placed on reserve may be borrowed on an hourly basis subject to the number of students demanding for its use at a given time.
